A newborn baby girl, who was declared dead at a hospital, was found to be alive an hour after being buried in a graveyard.

The shocking incident took place in India's northern region of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

The family reportedly buried the baby after doctors said she died soon after birth. However, they were forced to dig up the baby's grave nearly an hour later as some local residents raised objections over the burial location, the Hindustan Times reported. They wanted the baby to be buried at the family's ancestral graveyard.

When the grave was dug up, the family members found that the newborn was breathing. She was rushed to a hospital.

"After initial treatment, she was referred to Srinagar for specialized treatment by the doctors," said Manzoor Alyas Wani, a local official.

The family members alleged that the hospital was negligent in handling the baby's case.

"This is the height of negligence and non-professionalism on the part of doctors and other staff posted at SDH Banihal," a local resident said, demanding strict action against the hospital staff, local outlet Greater Kashmir reported.

Wani alleged the baby was not given proper medical attention at the hospital for more than two hours after she was born.

"We have already placed a junior staff nurse and sweeper working in the gynecology section under suspension with immediate effect, pending an inquiry," said Dr. Rabia Khan, a medical officer.

In another similar incident in India, a newborn girl was found alive and breathing right before her funeral last week. Authorities said the baby needed treatment due to some health complications. Doctors advised her parents to take her to a government hospital. However, her family took her to a private hospital thinking their baby would receive better treatment there.

Doctors at the private facility told the family that the baby girl had died. But, just before her funeral, she started breathing and was rushed to a different hospital.
