KEY POINTS

  • Deebo Samuel is ready to buckle down to work with the San Francisco 49ers
  • The 49ers will field a tandem consisting Samuel and Trey Lance this 2022-23 NFL season
  • Jimmy Garoppolo's camp is reportedly in discussions with the New York Giants

Deebo Samuel is expected to return to active duty for the San Francisco 49ers after the 26-year-old wide receiver reportedly inked a three-year contract extension.

The star wide receiver had been sitting out training camp practices with the Niners with contract talks ongoing. This has now been settled according to a report from ProFootball Talk.

According to multiple reports, the South Carolina native agreed to a deal worth around $71.55 million, wherein $58.1 million of the total amount is guaranteed.

Other details about the contract remain limited for now. However, it appears the contract will be fairly similar to what DK Metcalf got with the Seattle Seahawks.

As previously reported here in International Business Times, the 24-year-old second-round pick of the 2019 NFL Draft signed a $72 million extension.

Like Samuel, Metcalf also did not practice but was present during training camp before rejoining the team last July 26.

Samuel is coming off a great NFL season, where he caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards and led the league with an average of 18.2 yards per catch while also running the ball 59 times for 365 yards and eight touchdowns.

This is a welcome development for the Niners who are believed to be trying to build a big-play offense around Samuel and new starting quarterback Trey Lance.

A lot hinges on the Lance-Samuel combination, a new tandem that Kyle Shanahan is expected to turn to moving forward.

In related news, most are still wondering what the future holds for Jimmy Garoppolo.

The two-time Super Bowl champion is coming off offseason shoulder surgery, and most feel that the 30-year-old will be traded at some point.

Most NFL teams are employing due diligence, wanting to see first how Garoppolo has recovered from his medical procedure.

But with training camps already underway, it appears that at least one team has taken interest in the grizzled play-caller.

The reason seen behind this is that this particular team realizes that its quarterback situation needs to be addressed.

Marco Martinez of the “49ers RedZone” podcast claimed that Garoppolo’s agents have been in talks with the New York Giants.

Right now, the Giants have Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor.

Jones has not been giving a good impression, seen as one reason why Brian Daboll may want to touch on the possibility of acquiring Garoppolo for a much-needed upgrade for the 2022-23 NFL season.
