Democrats continue to enjoy a healthy lead on the generic congressional ballot as the midterm elections approach, according to recent polls.

Likely voters favor Democrats over Republicans by 9-points, 52 percent to 43 percent, NBC News noted based on its own polling average.

Democrats hope to flip the House and Senate during the midterm elections in November. To win the Senate, Democrats need to gain four seats, while in the House they need to gain only three.

The Cook Political Report currently lists 22 House seats as "toss-up" races. Of those, Democrats currently hold six and Republicans hold 16. In the Senate, the website lists 7 seats as "toss-up"; of those, 2 are currently held by Democrats and 5 by Republicans.

Independent voters have swung toward Democrats significantly, according to the network. They favored Democrats by about 6 points when Trump's second term began. That gap swelled to 20 points by this spring, following the start of the Iran war.

Although Republicans have recovered somewhat since then, independents still favor Democrats on the generic congressional ballot by 16 points.

NBC News' polling average for Trump's approval rating is at 39 percent, with his disapproval up to 59 percent. When Trump's second term started his approval rating was just over 50 percent.

The NBC polling average is actually slightly higher than the Silver Bulletin website's averages for Trump. Silver Bulletin has Trump's approval rating at 37.4 percent, the lowest it has been since he returned to office. The website has Trump's disapproval rating cracking 60 percent, which is also the highest it's been since his second term began.

The website also tracks how Trump is performing with the public on key issues such as the economy, inflation, trade and immigration. Trump is underwater on all of those issues, and his public approval on each has trended downward.

In particular, Trump appears to be struggling with the public on economic issues. The Silver Bulletin polling average has Trump at -32.1 percent on the economy and -46.4 percent on inflation.
