Democrats Want Answers About Donald Trump Jr.’s Island Wedding Party Funded By Russian Oligarch

The ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee has launched an inquiry into Donald Trump Jr.'s May wedding celebration in the Bahamas after learning that the event was apparently bankrolled by a Russian oligarch with ties to Vladimir Putin.

"As the son of President Donald Trump and the part-owner and major investor of multiple companies with extensive Department of Defense contracts, any apparent ties to members of Russian President Vladimir Putin's inner circle raises serious questions about pay-to-play schemes and foreign intelligence infiltration of the President's family," wrote Democrat Robert Garcia in a letter to White House Chief of Staff Susan Wiles.

The inquiry focuses on Umar Kremlev's involvement in paying for the island festivities. Pro Publica reported this week that Kremlev helped fund the three-day party held on a private island.

According to the report, the festivities included a five-tier funfetti cake that was flown in. Guests were apparently transported by helicopters and seaplanes and stayed in oceanfront villas. The event was punctuated with a private fireworks display launched from a barge.

"Mr. Kremlev reportedly paid to rent out one of the private islands used for the wedding that typically costs $100,000 per night, along with other expensive items, such as a $70,000 fireworks show," Garcia wrote in his letter.

According to Garcia, Kremlev is involved in an organization accused of abducting Ukrainian children: "Mr. Kremlev is also tied to a Russian group, Healthy Fatherland, run by his sister-in-law and under Ukrainian sanctions for its alleged role in abducting and Russifying Ukrainian children in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine."

Donald Trump Jr. married Bettina Anderson in May. The couple responded to the reporting in an Instagram post, while acknowledging that Kremlev paid for much of the Island celebration.

"Our dear friend Umar very generously hosted two incredible nights of celebrations for us AFTER our wedding. It was an extraordinarily generous wedding gift from a friend, and something for which we were and remain incredibly grateful," they wrote.

"It's unfortunate that something so personal and happy can be recast as something political or sinister simply because of who someone is or where they come from. Friendship doesn't require a political motive," the couple wrote.

In his letter, Garcia says Kremlev has known Donald Trump Jr. only since September 2025.

Pro Publica reported that about 50 people attended the multi-day island party. The article described Kremlev as an imposing man, with a shaved head, who was with a group of associates who kept to themselves, speaking Russian.

"We are fortunate to have wonderful friends from all over the world, and we will never be embarrassed or apologetic about being grateful for them," Donald and Bettina wrote on Instagram. "So, for anyone determined not to let the facts get in the way of a good story: NO CONSPIRACY , NO MYSTERY. Just a private family wedding, a wonderful weekend with friends and one hell of a party."
