A woman was shot dead by a police officer after she struck him with her car. The incident took place in Shelton, Washington, on Tuesday night.

The Mason County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that the incident took place around 9.45 p.m. in the driveway of a home near East Mason Lake Drive West.

"Our deputy was on foot when a suspect appears to have tried to run over the deputy. The deputy was hit by the vehicle and at some point fired his weapon at the suspect,” the sheriff’s office said.

The suspect, later identified as 32-year-old Kathryn R. Hale, continued driving with the officer in pursuit. The car eventually crashed in a ditch, about three miles away from where the incident took place. The officer and another deputy arrived at the accident scene and gave the woman first aid. The medics arrived and took her to a nearby hospital. However, the woman succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital. The autopsy will be held on Thursday.

Meanwhile, investigators from Thurston County and the sheriff’s offices in Lewis and Grays Harbor counties will investigate the incident. The deputy, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, was placed on administrative leave.
