Former President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to intervene in the release of his tax records to a Democratic-led House Committee.

Trump issued the appeal to Chief Justice John Roberts, requesting the court step in to block the committee from getting his tax returns, insinuating the desire for his records is politically motivated.

"The Committee's purpose in requesting President Trump's tax returns has nothing to do with funding or staffing issues at the IRS and everything to do with releasing the President's tax information to the public," the petition said.

Trump's legal team is seeking the release of his records to be put on pause until the Supreme Court decides to see a case from a lower ruling court okaying the disclosure.

If the Supreme Court grants Trump his request it would likely delay the release of his long-sought after-tax returns for several more years.

The House Ways and Means Committee seeks the records as part of an investigation seeking to evaluate how the Internal Revenue Service audits presidential returns.

The committee seeks Trump's records for the years 2015 through 2020.

Trump has battled the request since its birth, working his way through the judicial hierarchy and receiving numerous unanimous rejections. Now he seeks the intervention of a Supreme Court in which he appointed three justices but has still shown a tendency to rebuke him.

Many on the House committee believe Trump's latest request is only delaying the inevitable, and that soon enough access will be granted to the records.

"The law has always been on our side. Former President Trump has tried to delay the inevitable, but once again, the Court has affirmed the strength of our position," said committee chairman Rep. Richard Neal, D-Mass. "We've waited long enough—we must begin our oversight of the IRS's mandatory presidential audit program as soon as possible."
