Arturo Beltran Leyva, the chief of an important Mexican drug cartel, was killed at his apartment on Wednesday in Cuernavaca, south of Mexico City, the Mexican Navy said in a statement.

Beltran and three members of the cartel were killed in the shootout carried out by sailors. A fifth cartel member killed himself jumping out of the window. The navy said three sailors were injured.

Arturo was killed at the entrance of his apartment in a luxurious building. At the apartment were found thousands of dollars and Mexican pesos in cash, religious stamps, weapons, toys, Hugo Boss clothing and a family photo album, Mexican media reported.

Several grenades were thrown at the scene. The Associated Press reported there were 10 and Mexican media reported more than a dozen.

Beltran was known as the boss of bosses, and was the head of the Beltran Leyva cartel which imports and distributes tons of cocaine in the United States, as well as large quantities of heroin, the Associated Press reported.
