KEY POINTS

  • The Greatsword is found in a chest along the north road of Caelid
  • The chest is guarded by giant dogs and crows
  • The weapon requires 30 STR to wield

It’s no secret that the majority of the “Souls” games are inspired by “Berserk,” and nothing makes this more obvious than the Greatsword.

This weapon, which bears an uncanny resemblance to Guts’ Dragonslayer, has been present in “Dark Souls” games since the first one. Seeing this weapon return in “Elden Ring” is no surprise, and there’s no doubt that fans have been looking forward to using this sword against the many monsters in The Lands Between.

Despite being an Easter egg of sorts, getting the Greatsword isn’t as complicated as one would think. With the proper knowledge and a bit of courage, players can get this weapon as soon as they start the game.

The Greatsword can be looted from a chest in a wrecked caravan in Caelid, toward the eastern border of Limgrave. Players will want to get their horse first, which can be unlocked by resting at the Site of Grace by the Gatefront Ruins.

After getting Torrent, ride toward the east side of Limgrave until the sky turns red. Continue following the road, and upon reaching the fork, turn left and head northward. Continue down the road to find a ruined burial coach surrounded by giant dogs feasting on corpses.

To avoid alerting the dogs, circle around the right side and approach the coach from the north. Make sure to stay crouched and approach slowly. Hop onto the coach, open the chest and grab the Greatsword.

Much like the Dragonslayer from the “Berserk” manga, the Greatsword requires inhuman strength to wield: 30 STR, to be specific. Players can wield this sword as early as the 20 STR mark so long as they use both of their hands and wear light or no armor.

The Greatsword is an excellent weapon for pure-strength builds, but it can also be used for hybrid STR/FAI or STR/INT builds as well once players get the right Ashes of War. Equipment load will be a problem until players get enough points into the Endurance stat. This can be bypassed a bit by equipping the Arsenal Charm, which is given to the players by Nepheli Loux at Stormveil Castle.
