‘Elementary’ Season 5 Spoilers: Are Sherlock And Fiona Still Dating Each Other?

“Elementary” Season 5 is going to give fans an update on Sherlock’s (Jonny Lee Miller) romantic life.

Executive producer Rob Doherty revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Betty Gilpin, who plays Sherlock’s latest love interest Fiona, will be returning for next installment to continue the story arc between the two characters.

“We certainly owe a status report for the Sherlock/Fiona relationship,” Doherty said. “In the first few episodes there won’t be much mention of her, but we are working on a return for Betty Gilpin. Fiona is a thread that we won’t let dangle too long, especially considering how much we love Betty.”

Gilpin, who is best known for portraying Dr. Carrie Roman on Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie,” is set to return for at least one episode, airing in mid-November.

The 29-year-old actress made her series debut as Fiona in Season 4, Episode 9, titled “Murder Ex Machina,” in which Sherlock and Joan (Lucy Liu) met her during a murder investigation.

According to the character's official description, Fiona is “a brilliant and socially awkward software engineer.” Although Fiona describes herself as “neuro-atypical,” others see her as a high-functioning autistic. Fiona has difficulty reading people. She also strictly follows rules and always tells the truth.

Since she and Sherlock are both odd and gifted individuals, they have found themselves drawn to each other. In Season 4, episode 12, both characters confessed that they have feelings for each other. In episode 18, “Ready or Not,” it was revealed that the two had been dating for quite some time. But when Fiona felt that Sherlock was acting different around her, she decided to end their relationship.

Later though, Sherlock opened up to her and admitted that he was just being careful because he’s never had a serious relationship before. Fiona understood where the detective was coming from, and the episode ended with the two consummating their newfound connection.

As previously reported, Fiona isn’t the only Season 4 character returning next installment. Entertainment Weekly reported last month that Virginia Madsen will be reprising her role as Paige in episode 3 of the upcoming season.

“Elementary” Season 5 premieres Sunday, Oct. 2, at 10/9c on CBS.
