KEY POINTS

  • Scot McTominay scored the winner for the Red Devils
  • Man Utd will next face Newcastle on Sunday in the Premier League

Erik ten Hag feels Manchester United "lacked" something in what seemed a fine performance by them in their 1-0 win over Omonia.

Scott McTominay, who came off the bench in the second half, scored a 93rd-minute winner to bag three points for the Red Devils and maintain pressure on Group E leaders Real Sociedad in the Europa League.

In a post-match interview, Ten Hag said Manchester United should have scored at least three or four goals against Omonia at Old Trafford on Thursday.

"One thing about football, you have to score. I think this game had to be three or four-nil. The only thing that we were lacking was scoring goals. We scored so many chances and that is not easy against an opponent who I would say they are really compact, like a handball defence. There was a lot of movement and a lot of creativity. So many chances, but we didn't score," Ten Hag told reporters after the game in Manchester.

Toward the end of the game, Ten Hag switched the positions of his forwards as he wanted Marcus Rashford to play closer to Cristiano Ronaldo in a bid to give the Portuguese forward more support.

"I wanted to put Marcus [Rashford] closer with Ronny [Cristiano Ronaldo], to give him more and more support, and also get a different variation on the right wing. They have to adapt to a more midfield player, like Bruno [Fernandes] is, than the typical winger. For 60 minutes, Antony endured and with Bruno, we get different variations. We had to try and bring an impact," Ten Hag revealed.

McTominay netted his first goal of the season Thursday. After the game, the midfielder backed Rashford, who failed to score despite creating so many chances.

"Everyone wants to win the group, it's important for the games coming ahead so, as I say, for us, it's massive. Marcus had so many opportunities and he's come in at the end saying 'I could have been there all day and the ball wouldn't have gone in the net'. He's done pretty much everything but score, but yeah as I say – we hit the crossbar with Casemiro. Their goalkeeper, I've just seen him then, was different class, to be fair to him, so fair play to them," McTominay said.
