  • Victim's family seeks to press charges against Benjamin's daughter

The girl who sucker-punched a 15-year-old during a basketball game turned out to be the daughter of former NBA player Corey Benjamin.

The 43-year-old was not present at the event but opted to step forward to apologize for the incident.

Benjamin, who started his NBA career in 1998 and also saw action for the Chicago Bulls from 1998 to 2001, was saddened by the video showing the cheap shot of his daughter.

In an interview with NBCLA, the 28th overall pick of the 1998 NBA Draft was saddened and apologized for the fiasco.

"To the young lady who was punched by my daughter during a youth basketball game, I sincerely apologize to you and I am praying for your complete healing both physically and emotionally. To her family, I deeply apologize and regret that this happened to your daughter as she did not deserve this to happen to her," part of Benjamin’s statement read.

"Finally, I apologize to all of those who have been impacted and hurt by the actions of my daughter as well as those of her mother. I am here for your family and wish only the best for you."

The incident happened during the youth basketball game last Sunday, November 7 at the Map Sports Facility.

The SoCal Blaze team was comfortably up when a player on the Dream Academy team attempted a three-point shot but missed.

The victim, identified as Lauryn Ham, tried to defend the shooter. But both ended up sprawled on the floor after the play.

When both got up and play resumed, the daughter of Benjamin suddenly threw a punch at Ham.

All of this happened in front of Ham's mother, Alic, ABC 7 reported.

The incident led Alice to press for charges against the stocky female player, which she felt equivalent to the level of assault.

The mother added that Lauryn is still feeling the effects of the hit and is not able to attend school.

Kevin Hahn, an attorney representing the victim, said that the issue is more than one teenager hitting another player during the game.

"Well, that's a start. I mean we want the parties responsible to be held accountable," Hahn quipped.
