Facebook announced new custom settings to help curate what specific content will show up on a user's timeline.

Those who use the social media platform will now be able to utilize a "show less" or "show more" option. It allows users to choose more curated content by either pushing similar content through their timeline or eliminating it through a ranking score.

"Selecting Show more will temporarily increase the ranking score for that post and posts like it. If you select Show less, you'll temporarily decrease its ranking score," Facebook said Wednesday in a press release.

Facebook is offering the new custom settings through an advanced version of its artificial intelligence systems.

"By offering more ways to incorporate direct feedback into Feed ranking, we're making our artificial intelligence systems smarter and more responsive," Facebook added.

The move comes as Facebook and other social media platform have faced criticism over spreading misinformation. From August 2020 to January 2021, news publishers known for spreading misinformation got six times the amount of likes, shares, and interactions on Facebook than trustworthy sources, according to a forthcoming study from researchers at New York University and the Universite Grenoble Alpes in France.

Facebook is also updating its "Feed Preferences" setting to help users "customize how much content you see in Feed from the friends and family, Groups, Pages and public figures you're connected to."

Personalizing social media feeds has become increasingly popular as algorithms become more advanced.

Facebook, Twitter and TikTok all use algorithms to display posts and content that is specific to the users by what they engage with the most. Facebook's update will further customize those algorithms.
