A family was in for a harrowing surprise when they opened the suitcases they got from a storage locker auction in New Zealand and found that they actually contained human remains, likely from multiple victims.

Police were called to a property in the south Auckland suburb of Manurewa last week after the grim discovery was made by the family. Cops said the occupants of the house weren't involved in the crime, Newshub reported.

A source reportedly told the outlet that authorities could be looking into remains from multiple bodies. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

The suitcases were part of a trailer-load of property that was emptied into the family's house after they won an auction for items that had been abandoned in a storage locker.

Police believe multiple victims were involved in the homicide. However, there's no official confirmation on the claim as of yet.

"Police were alerted to the discovery on Moncrieff Avenue around 1.30 pm on Thursday, Aug. 11, after the occupants brought the unowned property to their address," Detective Inspector Tofilau Faamanuia Vaaelua said, as per 7 News. "From our inquiries so far, we can advise the occupants of the address are not believed to be involved in the incident."

"I feel sorry for the family because they've got nothing to do with it. And whoever did do it, come on, front up. It's a bit unfair, bro. It's horrific, f***ing scary," Shelton Honana, a Manurewa neighbor, said, according to Newshub.

In a statement to 7 News, New Zealand police said they could not provide more details about the matter.

"The priority for police is to confirm the identification of the deceased so that we can establish the full circumstances behind the discovery," police told the outlet.

"However, we are still awaiting the completion and results of the post-mortem examination, so we are unable to comment," they added.

Two hearses were reportedly seen on the property. Authorities had cordoned off the site and erected large police tents as the investigation continued.

Meanwhile, the deputies said there was no immediate threat to the general public after the shocking discovery.
