Kelly Reichardt's "First Cow" has kicked off awards season with an impressive best picture win at the annual New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC) awards Friday.

The organization, which comprises 50 film critics and journalists from various media outlets, announced the winners on its official website.

Chloe Zhao took home the best director accolade for "Nomadland" during the event.

The film is creating all the right noises before the nominations for the 91st Academy Awards. The movie, which stars Frances McDormand, is one of the top contenders for the Oscars next year. It currently holds a score of 96% on review site Rotten Tomatoes.

In the acting fields, veteran actor Delroy Lindo won best actor for "Da 5 Bloods," while the 21-year-old Sidney Flanigan picked up the best actress trophy for "Never Rarely Sometimes Always."

Maria Bakalova, the breakout star of "Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm," was named the best supporting actress for her performance. The 24-year-old Belgian actress has been one of the most talked-about stars of 2020 and her role in the second installment of the "Borat" franchise has taken her popularity to a whole new level.

Chadwick Boseman won the best supporting actor award posthumously for "Da 5 Bloods."

Meanwhile, Spike Lee was given a special award for inspiring the New York community with his short film "New York, New York."

The award for the best foreign-language film went to "Bacurau," a Portuguese-language movie that tells the story of a Brazilian filmmaker named Teresa, who travels to a village to make a documentary.

However, things take a turn when she realizes that the locals aren't exactly what they appear to be and are hiding dangerous secrets.
