U.S. Secret Service, whose job is to protect the president, said on Monday that it will investigate the hacking of Fox News Twitter account which falsely claimed that President Barack Obama had been assassinated.

Fox News reported the Secret Service about the hacking of the FoxNewsPolitics account early on Monday.

George Ogilvie, Secret Service spokesman said on Monday that the law enforcement agency would look into the false postings and conduct the appropriate follow-up, a local media reported.

Hackers leaved a series of six tweets on FoxNewsPolitics Twitter account on Monday claiming that Obama had been assassinated in Iowa.

Fox News, in a statement on its website called the tweets as malicious and false

“We have requested a detailed investigation from Twitter about how this occurred and measures to prevent future unauthorized access into FoxNews.com accounts,Jeff Misenti, vice president and general manager of Fox News Digital, said in a statement.

The online magazine Think at New York's Stony Brook University reported that the Fox News Twitter account, with 34,000 followers, had been hacked by a group called the Script Kiddies.

Adam Peck, Think staffer wrote on the magazine's website that he had exchanged electronic messages with a person claiming to be with Script Kiddies after the hacking.
