  • Rafael Nadal defeated Egor Gerasimov, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2
  • The 19-time Grand Slam champion has a French Open record of 94-2
  • Nadal missed out on the U.S. Open as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus

Tennis star Rafael Nadal kicked off his quest to tie Roger Federer’s record of 20 Grand Slams in the 2020 French Open. The 12-time Roland Garros winner has improved to 94-2 in the major tournament with a three-set win over Egor Gerasimov.

The “King of Clay” took care of the match with a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 win over the Belarusian standout. The 27-year-old Gerasimov was defeated quickly by Nadal as the Spaniard moved to 16-0 in all of his first-round matchups in the French Open.

“It is a different Roland Garros. Totally different than we are used to… But for me this year is as special as everyone at Roland Garros,” Nadal said, ATP Tour reported.

Nadal missed out on the recently concluded U.S. Open as a precautionary measure for the coronavirus. It’s a challenge for Nadal to get used to the environment as other tennis stars have already tallied more matches under the unique conditions of the new normal.

“I am going to keep trying my best. I am happy to be in the second round [after] a good start and now is the moment to go back to the hotel, have a good practice tomorrow and try to be ready for the second round,” Nadal continued.

The 19-time Grand Slam winner remains the favorite to win the tournament as he’s the current record holder for the most Roland Garros titles. With a dozen French Open championships, Nadal remains hungry to add more trophies to his already illustrious career.

"The only thing that I can guarantee is I'm going to be here [and] try my best every single day fighting, and trying to give to the people my best every single day," Nadal emphasized.

One of the players Nadal has to look out for is the recently crowned U.S. Open winner Dominic Thiem. The former two-time French Open finalist is aiming to get more titles this year and claim his spot among the game’s elite.

The next match of Nadal will be against American Mackenzie McDonald.
