The brother of British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell expressed concern for his sister Wednesday as she remains in a New York prison, stating it’s “degrading” and “amounts to torture.” The comments by Ian Maxwell come weeks after Ghislaine Maxwell's attorney claimed she is deteriorating in prison.

Ghislaine Maxwell, 59, has been in prison since July. She was arrested after being charged with multiple counts of the enticement of minors, sex trafficking and perjury due to her involvement with businessman Jeffrey Epstein. In August 2019, Epstein killed himself in a New York federal jail while awaiting a sex trafficking trial.

Ian Maxwell spoke to BBC Radio 4’s Today program and provided details about his sister’s life for the past eight months.

"There is no natural light, she is under 24-hour round-the-clock surveillance with 10 cameras, including one that moves and tracks her movements,” he said.

Ian Maxwell went on to say that she’s been housed in “effective isolation” for nearly 250 days in her 6-foot by 9-foot jail cell that only has a concrete bed and a toilet in it. The food is “basically inedible.”

He blamed her inability to prepare for her upcoming trial on the prison conditions.

Popular opinion on social media was mostly unsympathetic to Ghislaine Maxwell's plight.

Ghislaine Maxwell has already turned in two applications for bail but both were denied.

"I know Miss Maxwell is probably suffering in jail, nobody likes being in jail, nobody likes having their freedom restricted, but I really think bail should be out of the question, it would be very upsetting to the victims," said Gloria Allred, the lawyer representing the victims.

Ghislaine Maxwell's trial is set for July. She faces 35 years in prison.
