The whole world knows how close Prince William was to his mother Princess Diana. On several occasions, the Duke of Cambridge was seen getting emotional while talking about his mother. He even said that her absence has left a void in his life.

William will be celebrating his birthday on Sunday (June 21) and according to royal expert Katie Nicholl, his birthday might be tainted by a certain amount of sadness due to one particular reason.

In an interview with OK! Magazine, Nicholl revealed that the Duke misses his mother very much and it would be really “emotional” for him to know that she will not be present to celebrate the special occasion with him. Nicholl further stated Diana is still an important part of his life and his thoughts are always with her.

“William misses his mother. It must be emotional for him that she is not here to share this. She is still a significant part of his life so inevitably, on his birthday, his thoughts will be with her,” Nicholl said.

In 2017, William opened up about the horrific day that his mother died and said he was still in shock over the death of his mother.

“The shock is the biggest thing. I still feel, 20 years later about my mother, I still have shock within me. People say shock cannot last that long, but it does. You never get over it. It's such an unbelievably big moment in your life that it never leaves you, you just learn to deal with it,” William said at the time.

Later in the interview, the royal expert also shared how William is keeping the memory of his mother alive. She noted that the Duke keeps on talking about her with the kids and has a lot of photos of her around the house. Nicholl also said that his wife, Kate Middleton, also helps him by telling their children about all the good work that their grandmother did.

“William is keeping his mother’s memory alive. They have photos of Diana around the house, very deliberately so, and he speaks about her to the children. He and Kate share stories with them about how Diana helped people and they tell the children how much they would have loved their grandmother,” Nicholl said.

Diana, the first wife of Prince Charles, died in a car accident in August 1997 when she was just 36, while William and Harry were 15 and 12, respectively.
