While sports stars can take home millions by winning tournaments, each athlete in Forbes' list of the top-five highest-paid tennis players made more money off the court than on it last year. The sport's biggest names have used their fame to land lucrative endorsement deals and collaborations with brands such as Nike and Lacoste.

Here are the five highest-paid tennis stars in 2021 and how they made their fortunes, according to Forbes.

5. Rafael Nadal

Nicknamed the “King of Clay” for his outstanding performance when playing on clay courts, Rafael Nadal, 35, is considered one of the greatest tennis players of all time. His success has helped him amass an estimated net worth of $200 million.

The Spanish superstar, who is currently ranked world No. 5 by the Association of Tennis Professionals, earned $4 million in tournament prize money and $23 million off-court in the past year, bringing his total earnings to $27 million.

4. Novak Djokovic

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic tied Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal when he claimed his 20th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon in July.

Currently ranked world No. 1, the 34-year-old athlete currently has an estimated net worth of $220 million. He is said to have received $8 million in on-court earnings and $30 million off-court in the past 12 months, totaling $38 million.

3. Serena Williams

Holding the record for the most number of Grand Slam wins at 23 championships, tennis icon Serena Williams has amassed a staggering fortune over the course of her career and is now worth an estimated $210 million.

The 39-year-old added to her already massive wealth $1.8 million in on-court earnings and $40 million from off-court deals, or $41.8 million in total.

2. Naomi Osaka

With an estimated net worth of $25 million, Naomi Osaka has made explosive progress in the past few years to become one of the most famous and highest-paid tennis players in the world at only 23 years old. Despite losing in the third round at the Tokyo Olympics, she was the face of the Games’ marketing efforts.

Osaka earned $5.1 million from tournaments and $55 million from off-court deals over the last year, totaling $60.1 million.
