KEY POINTS

  • "His Dark Materials" Season 2 will be about multiple worlds
  • Lyra will go with her father to explore the new worlds
  • The plot is based on Philip Pullman's book "The Subtle Knife"

“His Dark Materials” Season 2 will be based on Philip Pullman’s next book in the series titled “The Subtle Knife.” The plot will be about Lyra Belacqua (Dafne Keen) travelling to other worlds with her father to uncover the secrets of Dust.

Following the events of the Season 1 finale, Lyra will go on yet another adventure. She learned a few shocking details about her background and her father’s rebellion against the Magisterium, and now hes world has expanded like never before.

Executive producer Jane Tranter previously told Entertainment Weekly that the second season is about “multiple worlds.” Lyra will be going on this journey with Lord Asriel (James McAvoy), but that doesn’t mean that the two will get along well in this journey, especially after what Asriel did in the finale.

Lord Asriel was mostly missing in the first season. He appeared in the beginning and then at the end. That will change in “His Dark Materials” Season 2, but McAvoy pointed out that his character has to continue to be an “enigmatic and slightly mercurial figure” to Lyra. He did confirm that the fans will get to see more of his character on the show going forward and the character will end up getting demystified a little.

Although the show is based on Pullman’s books, there will be slight deviations. Asriel, for instance, isn’t there in “The Subtle Knife,” but McAvoy explained that if the audience only gets to hear about the incredible things the character is doing without seeing him, it will leave the fans disappointed. Thus, there will be scenes related to Lyra’s father that are not in the books.

The other character to watch will be Mrs. Coulter (Ruth Wilson). A motion poster of the TV series on BBC One Twitter page teases that something has happened to the character.

Lyra is expected to meet some exciting new characters in “His Dark Materials” Season 2. The fans will have to wait and see who the new characters are. Meanwhile, BBC has shared how the producers managed to create Lyra’s polar bear friend Iorek Byrnison (Joe Tandberg) for the TV series.
