Hot sauce fans may find it difficult to find a bottle of Sriracha as the company that makes the coveted hot sauce, Huy Fong, is warning of a possible shortage of the product.

Huy Fong said it is anticipating a major shortage of its Sriracha hot sauce, saying in a statement obtained by CNN, “Unfortunately, we can confirm that there is an unprecedented shortage of our products. We are still endeavoring to resolve this issue that has been caused by several spiraling events, including unexpected crop failure from the spring chili harvest.”

The company, which is one of the largest producers of Asian hot sauce, warned back in April that severe weather was impacting the quality of chili pepper crops, CNN reported.

In a letter to its buyers, obtained by Bloomberg, Huy Fong said, “Currently, due to weather conditions affecting the quality of chili peppers, we now face a more severe shortage of chili. Unfortunately, this is out of our control and without this essential ingredient we are unable to produce any of our products.”

Huy Fong told distributors at the time not to “promise any products to customers unless you have the product in stock,” CNN said

The shortages affect Huy Fong’s signature Sriracha hot chili sauce in addition to its Chili Garlic and Sambal Oelek products.

But fans of the Sriracha brand are highly worried about not getting their spicy fix if the hot sauce disappears from store shelves.

To avoid running out of Sriracha, many are already stocking up in masses, much like they hoarded toilet paper in the early days of the COVID pandemic.

Others were willing to get arrested to get their hands on a bottle of the spicy stuff.

Still, other consumers of the hot sauce were totally devastated by the news of a possible shortage.

Chinese immigrant David Tran created Sriracha in 1980.
