Matt Damon may be one of the most popular actors in the United States, but he's managed to avoid being the subject of controversy and media scrutiny. One of the reasons why is that, unlike his close pal Ben Affleck, he is not as controversial as the "Batman" star.

According to E! News, a number of things have contributed to "The Martian" star's 99 percent scandal-free celebrity status, such as his wife and their marriage, but it is mostly due to his choices that he has managed to avoid having his name splashed across tabloids.

Damon married a non-celebrity named Luciana Barroso, who tended bar in Miami. This has helped the actor in keeping his personal life private and smooth sailing. Aside from this, Damon said he doesn't get hounded by paparazzi because he lives a relatively normal life. "It's really sex and scandal that moves those magazines, and there's nothing scandalous about a guy who's married and has kid," Damon told The Guardian in 2013. "If they come outside where I live, they are going to die of boredom—there's just nothing really going on that would sell a magazine."

When Damon tied the knot with Barroso, the "Good Will Hunting" star also opted for a civil ceremony. He confessed that he had wanted the wedding to be held in his home in Miami, but explained that keeping their big day private was difficult so they decided to have a civil wedding instead.

Damon also previously said that one thing he does not enjoy about being famous is being followed around. "It's weird, because you walk a fine line. You don't want to sound like you're complaining about attention or publicity," Damon told GQ in 2007. "And, um, I'm not complaining. But I have identified the parts of fame that I don't like. And one of them is being chased around."

Damon and his best pal, Affleck, married in the same year, but the latter and his wife, Jennifer Garner, split in 2015. Since then, Affleck and Garner's relationship, with each other and with other people, had been scrutinized by the media and the public.

Damon admitted that Affleck has the most experience between the two of them when it comes to being controversial. "If you end up in [the tabloids'] crosshairs, you're really [expletive]," Damon said, as per E! News. "Because there is an absolute relationship between how [expletive] you are, if you're on the cover of their magazines, and what happens to you as an actor. I mean, nobody knows that more than Ben."

Despite the differences in their lifestyles, Affleck and Damon have maintained their friendship over the years. In fact, the "Justice League" star brought his new girlfriend, Lindsay Shookus, to Damon's fight night party for the Mayweather-McGregor bout in August.
