Huawei is poised to beat Samsung in releasing the first smartphone with a hole in its display. Now a new leak has revealed exactly what Huawei's device will look like.

Huawei briefly showed off its new smartphone during an event celebrating the birthday of Chinese celebrity Jackson Yee, according to WinFuture. The phone, which is believed to be the Huawei Nova 4, comes with a circular cutout in the upper left-hand side of the display that houses the front-facing camera. This gives the device more of a true full-screen, bezel-less design. The device also appears to have little to no bezel at the bottom edge.

The top portion of the display provides users with a full status bar without a notch splitting it into two sections. The design is quite appealing and will most likely attract consumers who aren’t big fans of notches that are now a lot more popular thanks to Apple’s iPhone X from last year.

Other smartphone makers, like Oppo and Vivo, have found ways of making a true full-screen design by hiding the front cameras using mechanical solutions. The problem with this approach is that moving parts can wear out over time. Putting a small circular cutout in the corner of the display can still eat up a bit of screen real estate, but at least it’s a lot less intrusive or distracting than a real notch.

Frequent leaker Ben Geskin (@VenyaGeskin1) released a concept render of the Huawei Nova 4 earlier this week. The render showed that the device’s back will look similar to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, including a set of triple cameras. The render doesn’t include a visible fingerprint scanner, which could mean the device will have an in-display fingerprint scanner.

It’s being speculated that the Huawei Nova 4 is equipped with an LCD display manufactured by BOE, according to GSM Arena. The internal specs of the Nova 4 remains a mystery, but it could very well be an upper mid-range handset. The Nova 3 arrived earlier this year with a Kirin 970 10nm processor with 4GB/6GB RAM and 128GB of storage. Huawei might officially announce the Nova 4 on Dec. 3, which also means that the Chinese company will beat Samsung in releasing a smartphone with a hole in its display.

Samsung has already teased that it’s working on what it calls Infinity O display. The design of the Infinity O display is very similar to what’s found on the Nova 4. The Galaxy A8s is expected to be the first Samsung phone to arrive with the Infinity O display, but it might not be released until early 2019. The Infinity O display is also expected to be on the Galaxy S10 models next year.
