Gary, Indiana -- A shooting incident at a nightclub in Indiana has killed two people and wounded four others.

Officers arrived at the Playo's Nightclub on Grant Street, Gary, at around 1.57 a.m. ET, Sunday after receiving reports of shots being fired.

They found a 34-year-old man with apparent gunshot wounds near the entryway. He was taken to a hospital but was later pronounced dead, CBS News reported. The Lake County Indiana coroner identified him as Jonte Dorsey of Joliet, Illinois.

Officers also found an unresponsive 26-year-old woman inside the club. The woman, identified as Jah'Nice Quinn of Merrillville, was later pronounced dead.

Among the four wounded persons, one is in critical condition, while the other three have non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

People in the neighborhood were woken up by the commotion and the sound of gunfire Sunday.

"I was asleep. My wife and I were both asleep and then I heard the noise of the gunshots and then all of the commotion that was going on out here, people running," a neighbor told the outlet.

Cambri Shavon, who was inside the nightclub during the incident, said her phone was recording as she was trying to escape.

"My biggest concern was just making it out. Not getting shot," she told ABC7. "I tried to grab my things and run to safety as quick as possible."

Shavon and her friends were at the nightclub to support a friend who was performing that night.

"In the middle of them transitioning there was a crowd that just started screaming and then you heard shot, so we start trying to take cover," Shavon revealed.

When she ran to her car, she realized her vehicle was struck and a bullet was lodged in the wheel well.

"I noticed there was a bullet hole in the passenger side of the vehicle I was driving. And I'm just, I'm just grateful. I'm just thankful," she added.

Describing the situation, another neighbor said, "Shots. Just ringing, just back-to-back just ringing … Now, somebody's mother got to bury her daughter and a son, and it's so hard."

Gary police have not taken anyone into custody or released details about the circumstances that led to the shooting.

This is not the first time such an incident has taken place in the same area. About five years ago, a 25-year-old man was killed and four others were hurt in a shooting.

Local residents have called for a permanent shutdown of the nightclub following Sunday's incident. Gary Mayor Jerome Prince said the place was temporarily closed.

"Today, I signed a letter ordering the temporary closure of Playo's. We will thoroughly investigate the Saturday night incident and determine our next steps," the mayor said. "Lastly, we're identifying the numbers of calls that go to the Gary Police Department from a number of businesses. If their operations are jeopardizing our communities, we will hold them accountable, too."
