KEY POINTS

  • Martinez is focusing on playing good football at San Siro
  • Martinez could get a contract extension from Inter Milan
  • Barca may revisit Martinez transfer plans

Lautaro Martinez was someone that FC Barcelona could have gotten, but a lucrative deal never came to fruition.

With that being said, the Argentine player remained with Inter Milan, although the saga of a potential transfer remains up in the air.

Martinez would have been a key addition for Barca, a club in dire need of another striker. The 23-year-old would have been a sensible addition to the Catalan giants, who were looking for someone to fill in the void left by Luis Suarez.

For now, Barcelona will have to hold off those plans, until probably next summer.

Regardless of how things turned out, Martinez alleges that he is happy to be still around at San Siro. He vows to do his best and continually improve for the club even if there remains no clarity on what the future holds, Football Italia reported.

“I’m happy, we work every day, we want to win and to bring Inter as high as possible. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow. Today I can say that I am at Inter and that I’m happy,” the Argentine striker said.

Though Barca could revisit a trade for Martinez, a potential transfer may not happen at all. Talks of a possible contract extension with Nerazzurri have been suggested, something that could turn out well for him in the end.

So far, Martinez has been doing well. He has scored three goals so far in the club’s first five Serie A assignments for the season.

However, he has had his share of disappointment. That happened when Inter won over Genoa where he was replaced in the second half.

Visibly upset, Martinez was seen punching the bench. Some initially thought that it was him getting frustrated because he was taken out by manager Antonio Conte. But the Argentine explained that he was furious for performing poorly on the field.

“I was angry with myself because I didn’t play the game I wanted," he said. "It came out of me but today I am happy and ready for tomorrow.”

Martinez is expected to redeem himself when Inter faces Shakhtar Donetsk. Nerazzurri currently sits at No. 4 with 10 points. Ahead of them are Sassuolo, Napoli and AC Milan.
