  • Code from iOS 14.5 beta file suggests MagSafe battery pack for the iPhone 12 exists
  • Talk of two-way charging technology on an iPhone started before the launch of the iPhone 11

As speculation related to the iPhone 13 continues to grow, Jon Prosser, a renowned leaker of Apple-related news, has shared something interesting about the current flagship series. He claims that the California-based company has a MagSafe battery pack with reverse wireless charging in development for the iPhone 12 lineup.

Prosser revealed this update on his latest Genius Bar podcast. Around the 19:30 minute mark, both he and Sam Kohl touched on the subject of the canceled AirPower project. Their conversation then moved to the purported existence of two MagSafe-compatible battery packs.

They also mentioned an FCC filing in the past shows some iPhone models are in fact capable of reverse wireless charging. Additionally, it was noted that the feature could be enabled if the manufacturer wanted to.

According to an unnamed source, Apple is working on two versions of the MagSafe battery packs, said Prosser. What he highlighted was the premium variant, which purportedly supports reverse wireless charging, unlike the standard.

Another interesting topic they were discussing in the podcast was the likelihood of only one model making it to the market instead of two. Prosser then tells listeners to stay tuned for updates as he plans to finish and show the renders within the week.

Meanwhile, MacRumors points out that the information supplied by Prosser might not be entirely accurate. It states his track record when it comes to Apple’s product roadmap is questionable at times.

However, the publication recalls that in mid-February, a line of code within the second iOS 14.5 beta file discovered by one of its contributors Steve Moser hinted the same.

The data seems to confirm the existence of a MagSafe battery pack for the iPhone 12. Although reverse wireless charging was not indicated, prototypes spotted by supply chain insiders claim the device has a white rubber exterior.

Talks regarding the introduction of a two-way charging technology on an iPhone started before the launch of the iPhone 11 in 2019. Apple was reportedly unable to resolve some technical issues, which led to the feature being dropped.

If the rumored MagSafe battery packs with reverse wireless charging are eventually announced in a future product launch event, it would allow simultaneous cordless charging. This means users can recharge their iPhone 12 and other compatible accessories such as the AirPods with a wireless charging case at the same time.
