  • KXIP thrashed Kohli-led RCB in Dubai on Thursday
  • It was KXIP's second-biggest win in IPL
  • Kohli was dismissed for just one run in the game

Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli had a harrowing evening in Dubai on Thursday as he was fined INR 12 lakhs ($16,295) after his side Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) maintained a slow over-rate against Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 meeting. Kohli's side lost the match by 97 runs.

After asking KXIP to bat first, RCB made several errors in the first innings. Kohli was at fault twice when he dropped KL Rahul's catches twice, which allowed the KXIP skipper to score his second IPL century. In the process, Rahul surpassed legendary Sachin Tendulkar to become the fastest Indian batsman to 2,000 IPL runs. Tendulkar took 63 innings to reach the 2,000-mark in the IPL, while Rahul took three innings fewer.

Indian cricket website Cricbuzz reported that it was RCB's first offense in IPL 2020 under the IPL's Code of Conduct.

With an unbeaten 132 from just 69 balls, Rahul led from the front and helped KXIP post 206 for 3 in 20 overs in the first innings on Thursday. The KXIP skipper's knock includes 14 fours and seven sixes. RCB had a terrible start to their chase as the Bangalore-based team lost three wickets early in the match. Only four players scored in double digits: Aaron Finch (20 off 21), Ab de Villiers (28 off 18), Washington Sundar (30 off 27) and Shivam Dube (12 off 12).

Kohli's RCB were bowled out of 109 in 17 overs, handing KXIP a victory by 97 runs. It was KXIP's second-biggest match win in IPL in terms of the number of runs. Coincidently, KXIP's biggest IPL win also had come against RCB, which was back in 2011 when KXIP defeated RCB at home by 111 runs. Overall, in T20s, it was KXIP's third-biggest win after their 120-run win over New Zealand's Northern Districts in the Champions League Twenty20 in 2014 and 111-run win over RCB in IPL 2011.
