Iranian intelligence services are targeting U.S. military bases in Germany as tensions remain elevated amid reports of a potential return to military strikes.
The bases targeted include Ramstein and Spangdahlem, with covert attacks being considered a possibility, German outlet Wirtschafts Woche detailed.
The outlet went on to cite Western intelligence officials who added that Israel warned U.S. and German counterparts about the threats in September.
The report as British authorities continue to investigate a suspected terror attack at Fairford Royal Air Force Base, which the U.S. used to conduct attacks against Iran.
British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said his government believes Iran played a role in the incident.
"There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford," Burnham told the BBC.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also said that the incident involved a "foreign actor" but claimed he wouldn't "get into detail about that yet."
"I think it ties us to the reality here, and that is, we are dealing with elements in the world, and in the case of Iran, for example, who have openly threatened to attack American interests globally," Rubio said. "We're going to always take that very seriously. There will be repercussions for that, if it ever were to happen or even attempted."
British detained a seventh man in connection with the suspected terror attack on Tuesday. Authorities said the man is a 22-year-old British national. He was detained in the Westminster area, in central London, on suspicion of preparing a terrorist attack.
Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for counterterrorism policing said police continues to "pursue multiple lines of enquiry."
Asides from the five people arrested in the context of the incident, a UK-Iranian national was also arrested in London last Thursday. The 27-year old man was arrested in London, while another man has been questioned under caution. Two properties in the area have also been searched, the BBC reported. The men caught near the Royal Air Force base remain free on police bail.
