Jermaine Huggy Hopkins, who starred as Thomas Sams in the 1989 movie Lean On Me, was arrested in Phoenix, Ariz., on charges of buying 200 pounds (91 kilograms) of marijuana from an undercover cop on Tuesday.

According to The Associated Press, police say Hopkins told them he got involved in the drug deal to provide Christmas gifts for his family. That was apparent as the 38-year-old Hopkins, who lives in North Carolina, traveled all the way to Arizona to make the alleged drug deal.

TMZ reports that Maricopa County detectives set up a sting operation. Soon after Hopkins took possession of the marijuana, they pulled his SUV over and arrested him. Phoenix TV station KSAZ reports that detectives found 200 pounds of marijuana and $100,000 cash inside the car.

Officials later searched an Avondale, Ariz., apartment listed in Hopkins' name, saying that they found an additional 100 pounds (45 kilograms) of weed.

Huggy Hopkins, who is being held on $35,000 bond, faces up to five years in jail if he is convicted of two felony counts of possessing, transporting and trying to sell marijuana.
