Arsenal defeated Liverpool in the Carabao Cup on a close 5-4 win on penalties. The Reds’ Jurgen Klopp said after the match that his club had a chance to win the game.

“If there would have been a winner inside the 90 minutes, it probably should have been us. But we’re not in dreamland, you have to score and we didn’t do that,” Klopp said, The Guardian reported.

“We mixed up the team but it was a proper performance with a lot of the things we want to see when you wear this shirt. There were some really good individual performances,” the coach continued.

The match was a tightly contested bout as both teams were unable to score throughout 90 minutes. It was the crucial defense of Bernd Leno that stood out in the final stretch of the game and propelled the Gunners to the next round of the Carabao Cup.

“It was a very tough game. I think we made a few changes but I think you could see our intention to win this game. Of course it’s only the Carabao Cup but we wanted to go through because it’s a chance to win another trophy,” Leno said.

When asked if Leno was worried about his position in the team, he quipped that he remains confident about his current role with the club.

“No. I've never feared it. The club always gave me the feeling I was the number one, I am the number one and will be the number one,” Leno told Sky Sports.

The performance of Leno caught the attention of Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who shared that he was happy with how his goalkeeper played.

“We have to use the resources we have to strengthen the team. He [Leno] was really helpful to get us through to the next round,” Arteta said.

Both teams will have Premier League matches up next on Sunday. Arsenal will face Sheffield United at the Emirates Stadium.

As for Klopp and the rest of Liverpool, they will seek to bounce back from the loss when they face Aston Villa at Villa Park.
