Royal fans and the public seem to be over the moon and particularly fond of Kate Middleton—but some members of the royal family reportedly have a colder relationship with the Duchess of Cambridge.

According to a report in Express UK, Prince Andrew’s daughters, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice, don’t have the greatest relationship with Middleton, with Beatrice in particular not liking her because of how popular she had become—especially with her grandmother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II. According to the report, she was “quite icy” toward the Duchess due to those feelings, and it even led to awkward relations with Princess Eugenie.

The website reports that things got worse between the two women during her wedding to Prince William in 2011, after the royal couple chose to not invite Beatrice’s boyfriend at the time, Dave Clark, because they worried he wouldn’t be discreet, and things got even worse after her cousin himself reportedly revealed to the Queen that he didn’t think her boyfriend was a suitable future husband—contributing to their 2016 split.

“William isn’t a huge fan of Dave,” a source said back in 2015. “it’s fair to say that if Beatrice had asked the Queen for permission to marry Dave, and she, in turn, asked William privately for his view, she may not have been given a glowing report. Dave is a nice guy and he makes Beatrice happy, which is important. But William has always been wary of him. There is a clash of personalities.”

Things reportedly also appeared tense during the Royal Family’s Easter service in 2018, just a few months prior to Eugenie’s own wedding. A source claimed at the time that the York sisters blatantly snubbed the Cambridges and had to be reminded to be respectful—and Middleton was taking her soon-to-be sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, under her wing to try and avoid a tricky relationship with them as well.

“Things were so bad, Eugenie and Bea wouldn’t even stand with Wills and Kate after the service,” a source said. “Kate knows that Bea and Eugenie can be troublemakers and is trying to keep them at arm’s length from Meghan.”
