  • Kate Middleton wore diamond and pearl earrings borrowed from Queen Elizabeth on the monarch's 95th birthday

  • Middleton also paid tribute to the Queen and Prince Philip through her accessories during his funeral Saturday

Kate Middleton paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II when she and her husband Prince William attended an engagement on Her Majesty's birthday.

The Queen turned 95 years old Wednesday, just days after she said a final goodbye to her husband of 73 years, Prince Philip, during his funeral service in Windsor Castle. On the monarch's milestone birthday, Middleton subtly honored Queen Elizabeth by wearing a pair of diamond and pearl earrings she borrowed from Her Majesty's collection, People reported.

Duchess Kate sported the accessory when she and Prince William made a surprise visit to 282 (East Ham) Squadron, Air Training Corps in east London, where they learned more about how the Air Cadets support the young people in developing vital life skills. Both wore black to the engagement.

Queen Elizabeth first wore the stunning earrings when she celebrated her silver jubilee in 1977. The Duchess of Cambridge has also worn the piece on a number of occasions.

Prince William's wife has been using her accessories to pay tribute to the Queen in the past few weeks.

During Prince Philip's funeral on Saturday, Middleton sported dangling pearl earrings and a multi-strand pearl necklace from the monarch's collection to honor the Queen and the late Duke of Edinburgh. The duchess wore the jewelry with a black Roland Mouret dress with an asymmetrical neckline and a modest fascinator hat with a netted veil.

Middleton's earrings were a gift to the Queen by the Hakim of Bahrain on her wedding day in 1947. It was not the first time Middleton had worn the item because she was photographed sporting it on Remembrance Day service in 2016, just a year the Queen wore them for the same event.

The choker was also loaned to her by Queen Elizabeth. The elegant necklace, said to be created by Garrard, was gifted to the monarch by the Japanese government.

Princess Diana wore the piece during a state visit to the Netherlands in 1982. Middleton also wore the necklace to the Queen and Prince Philip's 70th wedding anniversary party in 2017.

In related news, royal author Katie Nicholl recently suggested that Middleton acted as the peacemaker between Prince Harry and Prince William during Prince Philip's funeral. The royal trio was spotted engaging in a friendly conversation while leaving St. George's Chapel together.

"It's always been my understanding that behind the scenes, Kate has tried very hard to forge a rapprochement and act as a peacemaker between William and Harry," Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight. "She loves Harry. She says that she is the sister that he never had. She has been heartbroken to see them fall out, and I think she is one of the few people, one of the few family members who would actually be able to push the brothers together, which she did in a very subtle way, but was very effective."
