Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle's alleged rift has reportedly been going on for a year now.

Last year, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge invited the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to their home at Anmer Hall to spend the holidays at Prince Charles' request. Unfortunately, the event did not bring the couples closer and it was even spoiled by a "ghastly row."

A senior royal aide told Jo MacFarlane of Daily Mail that things turned sour when Markle was judged to be "downright rude" upon arrival. Middleton reportedly had a word with Markle and from there, things went out of proportion.

"Kate had a quiet word with Meghan. It escalated rapidly after Meghan complained to Harry that she had been 'told off,'" the source said.

"He took her side, while William defended Kate, who was five months pregnant with Louis and certainly didn’t want this sort of confrontation."

According to MacFarlane, Middleton "already felt put upon in being asked to host Meghan and Harry." Middleton, who was still expecting Prince Louis at the time, was already tired and perhaps, the strain showed.

Due to the incident, Prince William and Middleton might skip spending Christmas with the royals. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are expected to spend the holidays with the Middletons.

As for the row between Markle and Middleton last year, it was reportedly not an isolated example of Markle's "high-handedness" according to sources. Robert Jobson claimed that even Prince Harry once told a staff member, "What Meghan wants, she gets."

The author also noted that Middleton exerted efforts to explain the royal rules to Markle, but her advice didn't go down well with Prince Harry's wife. Unlike Markle, the Duchess of Cambridge has dutifully accepted the advice she received on how to dress and carry herself as a royal.

Body language expert Judi James noticed Middleton and Markle's rift on their first joint engagement together last February. According to her, although they were photographed laughing those shots were "misleading."

Prince Harry and Markle are set to move to Windsor early next year before the arrival of their baby. Many find their decision odd as they were initially set to move to a bigger apartment in the palace next to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. However, a source claimed that the couple doesn't want to live next to Prince William and Middleton.
