What should have been a happy occasion ended in tragedy as the parents of a high school senior died in a car crash on the way home from his graduation.

Nancy Barnett, 53 years old from Ewing, Kentucky and her husband Lyndon, 56 years old, figured in a crash involving the family car and a pickup truck on Saturday (May 23) shortly after leaving Fleming County High School.

The senior, Dalton Barnett and his 26-year-old brother Michael were both in the car but survived. Nancy was pronounced dead at the scene and Lyndon later died of sustained injuries at the University of Kentucky Hospital.

In a statement, principal Stephanie Emmons and schools superintendent Brian Creasman said that the Barnett couple was proud of their family. “We will be here to support Dalton and his brother as they face the difficult times ahead,” the statement read.

Emmons also said that Nancy wore a shirt that read “Senior Mom: Some people wait their entire lives to meet their inspiration. I raised mine. Class of 2020.” to the graduation. She said it spoke about what kind of mother Nancy was.

Emmons asked members of the community to “join us in your thoughts and prayers” for Dalton.

In a statement posted to the Fleming County High School Facebook page, Emmons said that Dalton and his brother were still being treated at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. “Please continue to uplift this family through your thoughts and prayers during this time,” the statement also read.

Nancy Barnett was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Impala when she turned left, crashing into a 2002 Chevrolet pick up driven by Anthony Bailey of Wellington, KY.

Anthony and another passenger were not injured according to state troopers.

Kentucky state police said the crash is still under investigation.
