Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp explained how his strategy, which was around Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's position, paid off during the Reds' 2-1 win over Genk in the Champions League Tuesday night.

With three more points to their account, Liverpool now need just another win to secure a place in the knockout rounds.

Oxlade-Chamberlain netted the winner just eight minutes into the second half after Gini Wijnaldum's earlier opener was equalized by Genk's forward Mbwana Samata a few minutes before half-time.

Prior to the game, Liverpool had a close encounter against Aston Villa in the Premier League, where Sadio Mane's goal in the extra-time handed Liverpool a crucial win. Klopp made as many as six changes from that match for the Genk clash on Tuesday including Mane and Roberto Firmino being benched.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, who now has scored four goals in those many matches, was given the central attacking role with Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi on either side.

"It was clear that it would be a bit tricky in some departments because the front three never played together in these positions, in a formation like this. We wanted to have Ox between the lines, give him the space to turn and run at the last line with options right and left," Klopp said after Liverpool's win at home against Genk.

Although the strategy paid off, Klopp insisted that Liverpool could have scored more.

"That worked pretty well sometimes and we could have scored more often. It was not a complete game, but they scored a really nice goal. The first half was done and we had to start anew. We scored another nice goal but then didn’t finish the other situations off," the German added.

With two matches left in the group stage in the Champions League, Liverpool face Napoli at home and the Austrian club, RB Salzburg, away. On the other hand, the Premier League leaders also have a big match coming up as they host reigning champions, Manchester City, on Sunday.
