KEY POINTS

  • Frank Vogel has reportedly coached his last game with the Los Angeles Lakers
  • There are no clear frontrunners to take over the coaching duties from Vogel
  • LeBron James and Anthony Davis are expected to return for the Lakers next season

The Los Angeles Lakers are headed to an interesting offseason, and heads are expected to roll.

At the top of the list is head coach Frank Vogel, the same man who led the franchise to their last NBA title in 2020.

According to ESPN, the 48-year-old coached his final game for the Lakers and a decision is expected to be relayed to Vogel on Monday, April 11.

As far as his replacement, there is no clear-cut frontrunner for the job.

The search for the next Lakers head coach is expected to be expansive and lengthy.

The Lakers wrapped up their disappointing 2021-22 season with a 146-141 overtime win over the Denver Nuggets.

It was an irrelevant victory considering they were already eliminated from the play-in tournament as early as last week.

As of Sunday, April 10 Vogel was clueless about his status as he signed a three-year deal to handle the Lakers in 2019 and was given a contract extension through 2022-23.

"I haven't been told s--- and I'm going to enjoy tonight's game, celebrate what these young guys did in terms of scratching and clawing and getting back in this game and getting a W, and we'll deal with tomorrow," Vogel said in the post-game interview to reporters.

Vogel is the first of several potential personnel expected to head out of Hollywood, while players who signed a one-year deal are not assured of returning.

Russell Westbrook is also another case that needs addressing. Owed more than $47 million, the Lakers are expected to explore trades for the 2017 NBA MVP.

The only thing certain is that LeBron James and Anthony Davis will still be around for the 2022-23 season.

As far as coaching candidates, the names of Quin Snyder and Nick Nurse have been mentioned as potential targets to take over as head coach.
