“Big Little Lies” star Laura Dern has been nominated for an Emmy for her role as Renata in the hit HBO series. Also nominated in the best supporting actress in a limited series category is her co-star, Shailene Woodley. “Big Little Lies” stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman are also competing for an Emmy award in the best actress in a limited series category.

But even though all four of them are nominated this year, Dern stressed that there is no competition between them. “What a wealth of great female characters. You want everyone to win so they can go up together and they can all say how lucky we are to be collaborating. It’s the absurdity of comparison. You can’t say one is better than anyone else,” she told The Hollywood Reporter.

Last month, Dern talked about the possibility of a Season 2 renewal for “Big Little Lies.” When asked what she hopes will happen to her character, Dern told The Hollywood Reporter, “I think it’s really moving to consider how powerful women, certainly in America are placed. I think we’ve seen a lot of that in the past year – politically, emotionally – the labels that are put on women in places of power. Who is she really and what has she had to survive to get where she is, I think, could be a really beautiful ride.”

In the finale for “Big Little Lies” Season 1, Renata, Celeste (Nicole Kidman), Madeline (Reese Witherspoon), Jane (Woodley) and Bonnie (Zoe Kravitz) decided to keep what happened to Celeste’s husband, Perry (Alexander Skarsgard), a secret between them. Bonnie pushed Perry down the stairs, but they made it look like an accident.

Meanwhile, Dern also talked about the pay gap for women in Hollywood. According to her, they are trying to close the gap by not accepting anything less than what they deserve. “People will ask me why I haven’t worked with more women directors – it’s because they didn’t get the job. And it’s tragic… If a financer is hiring, from a list of directors it is rare that one female name is on there,” she said.
