KEY POINTS

  • Sadio Mane has just a year left on his Liverpool contract
  • He scored 23 goals for the Reds in the 2021-22 season
  • Mane also won the AFCON title with Senegal earlier this year

Liverpool FC superstar Sadio Mane is reportedly set to part ways with the Anfield side in the 2022 summer market.

Bayern Munich are leading the race to land Mane, who has a year left on his contract but has decided to take up a new challenge, Goal.com reported. However, International Business Times could not verify it independently.

Mane's representatives met Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic earlier this month as the club has made the Senegal national a top target, according to ESPN.

The 30-year-old forward had a memorable six years at Liverpool and the player will soon inform the club about his decision to leave, according to Fabrizio Romano, who has a credible record in the European transfer market.

Liverpool have a good relationship with Mane's representative, Bjorn Bezemer, and had planned to hold talks at the end of the season over his future. However, the recent reports of Bayern's interest – and an apparent meeting between Bezemer and the Bundesliga club's sporting director, have not gone down well at Anfield, the Goal report said.

Mane, who scored the winning penalty for Senegal to help them win the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in February, has already won three trophies this year. Apart from AFCON, Mane has also won the League Cup and FA Cup with Liverpool. Unfortunately, the team, which was chasing a historic quadruple, missed out on the Premier League title and Champions League trophy.

While Jurgen Klopp's side lost the UCL final 1-0 to Real Madrid, they lost the league title by just a point.

The former Southampton forward netted 23 goals and five assists in 51 games for Liverpool in all competitions this term. Only Mohamed Salah has scored more goals than Mane for Liverpool (31 goals).

Liverpool also have two other forwards – Salah and Roberto Firmino – on contracts that expire at the end of next season, although the former has already confirmed he will remain with the Reds for the 2022-23 campaign.

Overall, Mane has netted 120 goals and 48 assists in 269 competitive matches for Liverpool.
