KEY POINTS

  • The Clippers came out victorious against the Lakers
  • John Wall played great for a team that sorely needed a point guard last season
  • The Clippers' success will be partially tied in to Wall's availability

The Los Angeles Clippers came out triumphant against their crosstown rivals in the Los Angeles Lakers, and John Wall showed that he had a lot more left in the tank.

Prior to the season, Wall was counted out by the rest of the league due to his history with injuries, but him coming off the bench against the Lakers could be the best-case scenario for him.

In 24 minutes of game time, he put up 15 points, four rebounds, three assists, and one steal to help give the Clippers the 103-97 victory.

Wall showcased flashes of the speed and athleticism that made him such a household name in his early years as he cut through the Lakers' defense and made baskets through contact while also ensuring the offense flows perfectly.

The former NBA Slam Dunk champion would have had more than three assists had his teammates been able to make their baskets, but it certainly looked like the Wall of old.

There will be games where Wall will need to sit out some games as he manages his injury, but the Clippers appear to have been correct in taking a risk on the five-time NBA All-Star this past offseason.

At one point in the game, the Clippers had a 16-point advantage thanks to head coach Tyronn Lue's team-first approach which was evident on the box score as six Clippers players were in double figures, but none above 20 points.

It should be noted here that the Lakers' defense helped keep them stay in pace with the Clippers to whittle the lead down and lead the game at one point, but their offense failed to keep the momentum.

LeBron James again played heavy minutes and logged a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds alongside six assists, a steal, and two highlight-reel-worthy blocks.

Anthony Davis, who suffered a scary fall attempting to block Kawhi Leonard, put up 25 points with eight rebounds, and a steal in 31 minutes.

Offseason signee Lonnie Walker IV paced the Lakers this time around as he ended the game with a team-high 26 points after tallying only five points in their season opener against the Golden State Warriors.

As much as the Clippers' win was based on having Leonard available to play again, Wall running the point with both the starters and the bench is going to be an indicator of how well their season is going to turn out.

The team is already stacked with a healthy mix of veterans and star power, but having Wall's playmaking was something that they sorely missed last season.

Wall, after agreeing to a buyout with the Houston Rockets, was brought in to provide the bench with someone who can capably play the point and he proved that he can still play at a high level.

The Clippers will have an opportunity to build on their momentum as they face the Sacramento Kings on Saturday, October 22.
