One person is confirmed dead and more victims are expected to be found after a single-engine airplane crashed near Slidell Municipal Airport in Slidell, Louisiana on Wednesday night.

According to CBS 4, the crash occurred around 7:15 p.m., with the plane crashing in the woods near the airport, with calls coming in about smoke and fire coming from the area. In a statement, Slidell Police spokesperson Daniel Seuzeneau revealed that it is believed there is more than one other victim, and a search is on to see if there are more, or hopefully, some survivors.

“We have our Flir system drones looking to see if there are any other signs of life in the area,” he said. “We have multiple people still searching right now. At this time, we can’t determine anything else.”

NOLA.com reports that the airport is an uncontrolled airport, meaning there is no tower or pilots to consult for permission when it comes to landing, taxiing or taking off. The airport tends to have less air traffic than others, which makes it one that pilots often use to practice takeoff and landings.

WWL Radio confirmed a search is continuing on Thursday to see if there are any survivors, or if there are any other victims, though family members of people on a plane that was missing have reportedly reached out to confirm that more people were on board the flight.

The one confirmed victim has not been identified, and no further information has been made available about the details leading up to the crash.
