  • Lucas Torreira's season-long loan deal with Atletico Madrid does not include the option to buy
  • His agent says the asking price for Torreira will depend on his performance this season
  • Torreira is looking to start fresh with Atletico Madrid

Lucas Torreira finally got his wish after the 24-year-old midfielder ended up at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, but it appears his move to Atletico Madrid is not without complications. It turns out that contrary to initial reports, the deal does not involve a buyout clause.

“Lucas’s operation was very complicated,” Torreira's agent, Pablo Bentancur, said to Sport890.

Betancur narrated how the deal went down, revealing that they received offers from Roma, Fiorentina and Lazio but Torreira was determined to join Atletico. He added that there was no option to buy because Arsenal had to pay the clause for Thomas Partey.

“Lucas was blunt. He told us that his goal was Atletico and that we get it for him and we work for the players. He closed all the other possibilities, it either, ‘yes or yes’ to Atletico. Luckily in the end it was done,” the agent continued. “They have agreed a loan for a year without a purchase option and the price is not defined. It will depend on his performance.”

Torreira arrived in North London in 2018 and had a good start. Unfortunately, things took a downturn, and he has not seen action since the start of the 2020-21 season. He saw action in 29 games last season but later appeared to have fallen down the ranks.

As mentioned in a previous report, Torreira and Mesut Ozil were seen as likely to be dealt out. The Uruguayan player struggled to make it back to the regular team of Mikel Arteta after suffering an injury back in March.

But all that is now in the past for Torreira. For him, it is all about getting back on the field and playing for a club that he looks up to. His performance will be critical as well since it may dictate how much it would cost Los Indios to get him after the current season.

"I'm happy. The truth is that after a bit of suffering because it happened at the last hours for the transfer period to end, but the important thing is that the signing was given," Torreira said to Estadio Deportivo. "That took a long time, but as I said before, everything went very well and I was able to sign."
