KEY POINTS

  • Apple recently released new Mac models running on the new M1 chip
  • An analyst claims new MacBook Pro models in different sizes will arrive next year
  • The analyst also says they will feature a new look

Apple recently launched three new Macs powered by the new M1 chip. These Mac models all feature significant changes in internal components, namely the processor, as well as other innards such as RAM.

The new devices signal the company’s departure from Intel, which has supplied Apple with processors for the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, the regular MacBook, the Mac mini, iMac and Mac Pro.

Yet, despite the massive internal changes, the new devices still look like their predecessors. They appear to have the same chassis or body, the same display sizes (for the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air) and the same colors. One won’t be able to tell the difference between an M1 chip-powered model and an Intel-powered model with just a quick glance.

That said, fans who are waiting for new MacBooks that run on Apple’s M1 chip and boast a new outward appearance or display size will be glad to know that these devices are in the pipeline – or at least, that’s what TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said.

Kuo previously said two MacBook Pro models will arrive after Apple launches the first two MacBook models that are powered by an in-house chip. The first two MacBooks – the above-mentioned Pro and Air – were recently revealed.

The next two models, he said, will be arriving next year. These are the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

“We predict that Apple will launch new MacBook models including the new 13.3-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ equipped with the ‌Apple Silicon‌ in 4Q20, the new ‌MacBook Air‌ equipped with the ‌Apple Silicon‌ in 4Q20 or 1Q21, and new 14- and 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ models equipped with the ‌Apple Silicon‌ and all-new form factor design in late 2Q21 or 3Q21,” Kuo said months ago.

The last sentence there gives several clues about the upcoming devices:

  • Two new sizes

There will be two sizes: a 14-inch MacBook Pro and a 16-inch MacBook Pro. These will be definitely bigger than the ones Apple recently released.

  • They will have a new design

Kuo said both devices will feature an “all-new form factor design.” The design remains unclear at the moment.

  • They will be released in the middle of 2021

The two devices will arrive in the second and third quarters of next year, but which of the two will be released first remains to be seen.
