Superstar singer Madonna will play this year's Super Bowl halftime show, according to a report.

SBNation, citing unnamed sources, reported on Monday that Madonna will play Super Bowl XLVI at Lucas Oil Stadium in Houston on Feb. 4.

Madonna has long been rumored to be the headliner of the Super Bowl halftime show, notably for Super Bowl XXXV, but SBNation reports that she was finally able to come to a deal with the NFL for this upcoming year's show.

Madonna, while not nearly as wild as she was in the 1980s, still marks a trend away from the older acts that followed Janet Jackson's Nipplegate fiasco. Following the Jackson-Justin Timberlake halftime show in 2004, the NFL decidedly moved toward older acts.

In the years following the incident, Paul McCarthy, The Rolling Stones, Prince, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, and The Who all played the halftime shows. At the time some complained that the acts were past their prime, but the NFL seemed primarily interested in offering a show that could appeal to all audiences.

It wasn't until last year when the Black Eyed Peas and Usher performed that the Super Bowl moved toward an act that appeared to younger audiences.

It will be interesting whether viewers get a docile, older Madonna or the Madonna that made out with Britney Spears during the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.

The NFL refused to comment on Madonna playing the half-time show, according to SBNation.
