For “Magic Mike XXL” star Amber Heard, coming out was no easy task. The actress revealed in 2010 that she was bisexual after deciding she could no longer run from the truth. Years later she’s glad she made the decision to share her secret and doesn’t care what anyone thinks about it.

The 29-year-old sat down with The Times to discuss her coming out story. Heard told the publication she made the decision to come out publicly because she felt she could no longer “deny” her sexuality. She said she refused to mute a part of herself to conform to mainstream societal norms, adding that hiding it felt like an admission of wrongdoing. Although Heard is proud of who she is, she hopes she won’t “be defined by it.”

“I don’t want to have to deny my sexuality in order to be me. But I don’t want to have to be defined by it. I’m fundamentally opposed to trying to edit myself to be palatable or popular. I don’t give a f--k. I fight, but I shouldn’t have to,” she said.

Heard came out to the world in December 2010 at the GLAAD at 25 event in Los Angeles. During a red carpet interview the young actress told AfterEllen.com she credited GLAAD with her being able to come out. She said “organizations like GLAAD make that possible because if it weren’t for opinions being changed people being influenced, people being engaged to do the right thing, then there would be no prerogative for anyone to come out.” She closed out the interview saying, “I’m with who I’m with, I love who I love.”

Although she has expressed an interest in both males and females, Heard married actor Johnny Depp this past February. The couple got engaged in 2012 after meeting the previous year on “The Rum Diary” set. Both Depp and Heard sported rings throughout their lengthy engagement. The couple tied the knot in a private ceremony at the home they share in L.A.
