A man from Aurora, Colorado, was sentenced to six months in jail Tuesday for engaging in sexual acts with a dog in the backyard of his trailer home.

The dog will be euthanized as it turned aggressive after being removed from the abusive home, reports said.

Frederick Manzanares, 51, was sentenced to up to six months in an Arapahoe County Jail with work release. He was also sentenced to two years of probation for engaging in sexual acts with the dog and his former girlfriend.

Last month, Manzanares pleaded guilty to two counts of animal cruelty. Reports at the same time said he faced up to 18 months in jail.

Manzanares said he now recognized what he did to be wrong, and added he didn’t mean to cause harm to the dog.

“I know those desires are morally wrong and they will never manifest themselves again,” he said.

The abused dog, a male Akita mix named Bubba, was transferred to the Aurora Animal Shelter after being rescued. The officials at the shelter concluded the dog had become aggressive and was not safe to be adopted, according to Aurora spokesman Michael Bryant.

“The dog has exhibited unpredictable behavior, and shows signs of aggression towards veterinary services staff, volunteers, community service workers and staff members that the dog is not especially familiar with (staff who clean, feed, provide enrichment and treats daily,” Jenee Shipman, the manager of Aurora Animal Shelter, wrote in a letter. “It is my opinion this dog is not a safe adoption candidate or transfer candidate based on the history, kennel behavior and continued increase in aggression observed daily.”

“Bubba is not doing well at all,” Arapahoe County Deputy District Attorney Amy Ferrin said at the hearing Tuesday.

“This dog cannot safely be adopted,” Judge Cheryl Rowles-Stokes said before she read out the sentence. “This dog cannot safely be transferred. This dog cannot recover,” she said, according to a report in Denver Post. Bubba will be euthanized.

The issue came to light in March when Manzanares and his former girlfriend, Janette Solano, 49, were arrested for cruelty to animals. Reports said the discovery of animal abuse was triggered by a call to the Aurora Police Department in 2017 reporting an incident of domestic violence.

Solano said she got into an argument with Manzanares when she refused to have sex with their dog. An affidavit that contained details about the allegations said Manzanares began “introducing her to bestiality videos, bestiality forums, as well as providing her different literature on bestiality,” according to a report in Fox 31. Solano also said she was “somewhat jealous” of Manzanares’ relationship with their dog, according to a report in Daily Mail.

Manzanares also allegedly had a “sex chamber” which consisted of a padded bench designed to have sex with the dog. Reports said Manzanares supposedly used a dog hormone spray to arouse the dog. He would then take pictures and videos of the sexual acts, it added.

Upon investigation, police found video files which showed Manzanares, Solano and the dog having sex.

Bestiality is an animal cruelty offense according to Colorado law, but sex with animals was allowed under the same set of laws until 2007, reports said.
