The horrific sexual assault happened in Bhopal, a city in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The police apprehended a 30-year-old man identified as Ravi after the victim had recognized the photo of the suspect.

The 8-year-old girl, whose identity has not been revealed, was allegedly raped while she was playing near her home Saturday. The suspect allegedly asked the victim to buy him tobacco from a nearby shop and handed her $1.38, reported Times Now News.

"She bought the tobacco but when she went to give it to him, he told her to give it to another man standing next to a vat," Nisha Ahirwar, police inspector, said as per Times of India. When the girl moved toward the garbage vat, Ravi reportedly dragged her into it and raped her.

After the assault, Ravi allegedly handed the traumatized child around 3 cents and asked her to keep quiet about the incident. The victim however went home and narrated the ordeal to her grandmother. The victim's grandmother reported the incident to the police.

The victim told the police that she had seen Ravi a few times before the incident and identified him as the suspect when the police showed her photos of people who were in the locality during the incident.

According to the police, Ravi was trying to flee the state when he was taken into custody Saturday night. The police arrested him on charges such as rape of a minor and criminal intimidation.

The police said that the victim is in stable condition but has been deeply shocked due to the incident.
