In a horrific incident, a man in India slit his wife's throat before running his car over her. The attack took place Friday.

The man, identified as Gokul Kumar, used to fight regularly with his wife suspecting her of cheating on him. The woman was living separately because of his behavior, the Indian Express reported.

Authorities said Kumar went to the house of his estranged wife Friday and attacked her. He also tried injuring her parents. The 33-year-old woman, identified as Keerthana, was rushed to a hospital but she died there. It happened in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Police said the accused and victim were married for three years. But the two used to quarrel often. This increased after the accused left his job during the COVID-19 lockdown in the country.

"Six months ago, both applied for divorce but continued staying in the same house with Gokul leaving town half of the month," a police officer told the New Indian Express.

On the day of the attack, the estranged couple was arguing when Kumar took a knife from the kitchen and slit Keerthana's throat. The victim's father tried to intervene but Kumar attacked him with a sharp tool. After slitting the woman's throat, Kumar dragged her out of the house by her hair.

"Gokul then ran his car over her. After that he sped away in the same vehicle even as the neighbors tried to stop him and alert the police control room," a police officer told local media.

Police later arrested Kumar. The charges filed against him remain unknown.

"She would have died either way from the neck injury because it was really deep. He still ran over her," an officer told Times Now.
