An unidentified man was found dangling upside down from a 290-foot industrial chimney in England on Oct. 28, police said. He was pronounced dead after being recovered from the structure.

The unnamed man was reportedly spotted on top of Dixon's Chimney in Cumbria at 2:20 a.m GMT. He was brought down at 4:46 p.m. GMT and declared dead.

The man was said to be in his 50s and from Carlisle, according to the police.

The "highly complex" rescue effort was carried out by the Cumbria Police, Lancashire Fire and Rescue, Penrith Mountain Rescue Team, the Coast Guard and specialist contractors, the police said. Drones were also deployed to assess the scene and pinpoint his position. Finally, a cherry picker from Glasgow was used to lift the technicians and firefighters to the top of the chimney and retrieve the man.

"All this was done with the aim of bringing the man down safely and while maintaining the safety of emergency services staff," the police said.

Specialist welfare police officers are supporting the man’s family. "The thoughts of all the emergency services and partners are with the family and friends of the man," the police said.

Police are investigating why and how the man was stuck on the top of the chimney.
