Manchester United has received a major boost in its pursuit of one of Spain’s most sought-after defenders.

The Red Devils are expected to make a move for Villarreal star Pau Torres in the next transfer window. With the club now reportedly keen on landing a center-back, it is becoming more and more apparent that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side would be willing to splurge for a well-rounded defender.

Fortunately for Manchester United, Torres, despite being a highly-regarded player, will be available for around €30 million ($36.4 million), a figure not too overwhelming for the Red Devils, multiple outlets reported, including Manchester Evening News and Italy 24 News.

However, acquiring his signature may not be easy as Serie A side Napoli is also interested in raiding Torres from La Liga, the reports added.

Despite a handful of transfer link-ups, Torres remains focused on improving and winning at Villarreal at the moment.

“It is a pride to see that your work is reflected in this type of thing [transfer] that is spoken, but I face it with great tranquility,” the 24-year-old earlier said. “I am in a great club like Villarreal and from the tranquility I work every day. I’m not thinking about that [transfer] either. There is still a lot ahead of me and my short-term goals are the European semi-final and then to be available for Spain.”

“Right now I have a contract (until 2024) and I know that I still have room for improvement,” he continued. “I know that I am in a club where they will treat me well. I will not lack anything and that is very important to me.”

In Spain, Torres’ career seems to be soaring. Some have tagged him as Sergio Ramos’ successor, but for his club, he is a unique player who has the ability to compete at any major league in the world.

"Pau Torres is an amazing player--I think he’s top [player]," Villarreal coach Unai Emery told Football.london in January. "I've been a coach in Sevilla, PSG, Arsenal, and I’ve never seen a center-back like Pau Torres.”

"I think he’s going to play at the highest le,” he continued. "He’s playing now in the national team, but he can play in the top teams in Europe very soon.”

Aside from Emery, Villarreal midfielder Vicente Iborra has also raved about Torres’ qualities.

“We have enjoyed him and help him to give us the maximum because he is a great player,” Iborra told El Transistor last year. “Pau is a player with a great present and a great future and, as a teammate and friend, I wish him the best because he deserves it.”

“He has everything to succeed, a well-furnished head and a lot of talent. He can go where he wants,” he added.
