KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United is being linked to a transfer move for three La Liga defenders
  • The Red Devils are expected to prioritize Real Madrid's Raphael Varane with discussions likely to happen after the Euro 2020
  • Jadon Sancho's salary might affect the contract renewal of Bruno Fernandes

With Jadon Sancho finally close to completing his move to Manchester United, the Red Devils reportedly are now keen on bolstering its defense.

Manchester United’s roster overhaul appears to be far from over as the club now reportedly has its sights on landing a formidable defender. In the past few weeks, reports said Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane has topped Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s list and that a discussion about his move to Old Trafford is likely to happen sooner rather than later.

Speaking on “Strettycast,” reputable soccer transfer insider Fabrizio Romano said that Varane is indeed Manchester United’s next top target. However, he also noted that no progress is likely to take place between all parties involved until after the UEFA Euro 2020. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

“For sure, Raphael Varane is one of the players they [Manchester United] like,” Romano said. “It could be an opportunity but that depends on what Real Madrid want to do because at the moment they hope to convince Varane to stay, but the player wants to try something different.”

“He’s won everything with Real Madrid, he won the World Cup with France and now he wants a new challenge. I think the Premier League will be one of the opportunities with PSG too,” he pointed out. “He wants something new but let’s see what happens after the Euros when he will be back to talk with Real Madrid. Manchester United will be one of the opportunities.”

Aside from Varane, Romano also name-dropped Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde. However, the Italian reporter suggested that the Red Devils will prioritize Varane first “before other names” in the mix.

“Pau Torres for sure is on the list,” he added. “He is appreciated and they have been scouting him for a long time. Let’s see what happens with Varane before other names. Jules Kounde is another who was scouted by United. Tottenham are also interested in Kounde.”

Sancho’s arrival at Manchester United, meanwhile, seems to be posing a potential concern the club’s high-ups must be able to anticipate.

In an earlier report, Romano stressed the idea of Sancho’s staggering salary possibly affecting the contract extension of Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes, whom he tagged as the club’s “next priority.”

“Manchester United's next priority will be Bruno Fernandes' contract,” the journalist tweeted. “After adding another top salary with Jadon Sancho, Man Utd board know they’ve progressed in discussions [already opened] with Bruno about a new agreement.”

“Updates expected this month,” he added.
